Syria

Group #27 currently manages the case of 4 Lebanese men held in Syrian prisons. They are Elias Yusuf 'Aoun, Jean Michael Nakhleh, 'Adil Yusuf Dousat & Naji Elias al-Hindi and all have been detained incommunicado since October, 1990.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad (son of Hafez al-Assad) began releasing prisoners upon his election in June 2000, and this era of good feeling has been dubbed 'Damascus Spring'. He began tightening his grip, however, the following year.

Group #27's four (among 250+ others) were captured by Syrian troops upon the fall of Beirut, ending Lebanon's civil war. Syria administered Lebanon from October 1990 thru April 2005 and these four have never been seen by their families (or anyone else, for that matter) since. In July 2002 a number of Lebanese relatives visited Syria and met with Syrian Minister of the Interior, General 'Ali Hammud. The General assured his Lebanese visitors he would respond to their inquiries in 90 days; but, unfortunately, no new news on their life or health has been forthcoming.

Since the assassination of Rafiq Hariri in Feb 2005, Lebanon has gained independence from Syria, but these prisoners remain imprisoned, held incommunicado & completely unrecognized by the Syrian state.

Our three-fold objective is:

  1. Get the Assad government to admit holding these Lebanese.
  2. Get these prisoners medical attention and family visits.
  3. Work for their release.

Would you please send President Assad a letter today?

Latest: In January 2006 Congressman Eliot Engel (D. NY) agreed to work with AI-Bk & Amnesty-White Plains to seek the release of these 4 Lebanese. Please check monthly newsletter for latest.

Latest: On April 4, 2005 The New York Times published 'Families Yearn For News of Syria's Lebanese Prisoners' by Dexter Filkins.
