Each year, in observance of Human Rights Day, participants are encouraged to write letters to help free Prisoners of Conscience, stop violence against women and make powerful changes in the lives of individuals!

Background to the film "Dual Injustice": Since 1993, nearly 400 girls and women have been killed in Ciudad Juarez and Chihuahua City, Mexico. Most of the victims were young and poor, and many were sexually assaulted prior to their deaths. The authorities have done little to investigate or prosecute those responsible, and have on occasion used torture to extract confessions from scapegoats.

Amnesty supports the victims' families in their struggle for truth and justice, promotes initiatives that will lead to greater accountability and transparency in Mexico's law enforcement and judicial institutions, and encourages all sectors to support efforts to eliminate violence against women through education, prevention, and effective investigation and prosecution of the perpetrators.

Vigil for Darfur

On June 26, 2005 at Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn, a candlelight vigil was held in support of the victims and survivors of torture in the Darfur region of Sudan. The event coincided with the United Nations International Day in Support of Torture Victims and Survivors, a day commemorated by governments, human rights groups and others around the world. One member expressed, "The vigil was very nice....It was a gorgeous evening and I think some of the tortured voices of Sudan could be heard during our moments of silence." For more information about Darfur, view the interactive view the interactive feature narrated by New York Times op-ed writer Nicholas Kristoff entitled "Rape in Darfur."
